Partnership for Public Service statement on the passing of President Jimmy Carter
WASHINGTON – Partnership for Public Service President and CEO Max Stier released the following statement today following the passing of President Jimmy Carter.
“On the day of his passing, the Partnership for Public Service reflects on President Jimmy Carter and his lifetime of public service. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter, a lifetime supporter of civil servants, sought to make the federal government more effective and responsive to the needs of the public. In October 1978, Carter signed the Civil Service Reform Act, the first and most comprehensive overhaul of the government’s workforce structure since the birth of the federal merit system in 1883. Passage of this momentous package of reforms was only possible with Carter’s personal commitment to the integrity of civil service.
“From modernizing the federal personnel system to laying out prohibited personnel practices to establishing the senior executive service, Carter accomplished much in his term to improve the civil service. Further reform is still needed today to carry on Carter’s work to build a more effective and modern government and a stronger democracy.
“The Partnership for Public Service joins the nation and the extended Carter family in mourning President Carter’s passing.”
