It also highlights leading practices they can use to strengthen their effectiveness over their first year and beyond.
This guide is designed to help a new deputy secretary lead effectively from day one. It outlines best practices a deputy secretary should follow to increase their impact and advance the priorities of the administration and department focusing on key people, issues, stakeholders and management practices. It was informed by insights from former deputy secretaries and other senior federal leaders.
