• Also serves as the performance improvement officer and the chief information officer of the department
• Assists the deputy secretary of defense in the deputy secretary’s role as the chief management officer of the Department of Defense
• Supervises the management of the business operations of the Department of Defense and adjudicates issues and conflicts in functional domain business policies
• Establishes business strategic planning and performance management policies and measures, and develops the Department of Defense Strategic Management Plan
• Establishes business information technology portfolio policies and oversees investment management of that portfolio for the Department of Defense
• Establishes end-to-end business process and policies for establishing, eliminating and implementing business standards, and manages the Business Enterprise Architecture
• Supervises the business process reengineering of the functional domains of the department in order to support investment planning and technology development decision-making for information technology systems
