Responsibility
Management Scope

The Office of Management Strategy comprises three directorates that support the department’s bureaus and overseas posts. The office employed 55 full-time permanent civil service and Foreign Service employees in fiscal 2023. The office had a budget of $31.4 million in fiscal 2023.1

Primary Responsibilities
  • Guides the development of effective management policies for the State Department to improve data-driven decision-making in foreign policy.
  • Promotes the utilization of data and analytics to inform decision-making, monitor progress and measure the impact of management strategies and solutions.
  • Guides the development of strategies of active risk management in decision-making to better support diplomats in policy implementation.
  • Oversees three directorates lead by managing directors:
  • Policy and Global Presence
  • The Center for Analytics
  • Consulting and Advanced Projects 2

Requirements
  • Extensive background in project management and management strategy in leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating and innovating management and decision-making processes.
  • Strong leadership of data-driven efforts to deliver effective policy and process improvements.
Competencies
  • Strong communications skills with senior leadership.
  • Knowledge of diplomatic policy and related management processes preferred.
  • Ability to work across teams and organizations towards enterprise-wide solutions.
