Position Overview
As the third-ranking official at the Department of Justice, the associate attorney general is a principal member of the attorney general’s senior management team. The associate attorney general advises and assists the attorney general and deputy attorney general in formulating and implementing departmental policies and programs pertaining to a broad range of civil justice, federal and local law enforcement and public safety matters.
Compensation
Level III $165,300 (5 U.S.C. § 5314)1 The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017 (Public Law 115-31, May 5, 2017), contains a provision that continues the freeze on the payable pay rates for certain senior political officials at 2013 levels during calendar year 2017.

Primary Responsibilities
® Serves as a principal member of the attorney general’s senior management team.
® Advises and assists the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General in formulating and implementing departmental policies and programs pertaining to a broad range of civil justice, federal and local law enforcement and public safety matters.
® Shares with the Deputy Attorney General oversight responsibility for the Office of Tribal Justice.
