Position Overview

The assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Policy is responsible for developing and implementing the department’s significant policy initiatives.

Compensation

Level IV $155,500 (5 U.S.C. § 5315)1 The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017 (Public Law 115-31, May 5, 2017), contains a provision that continues the freeze on the payable pay rates for certain senior political officials at 2013 levels during calendar year 2017.

Position Reports to

Attorney general, deputy attorney general and associate attorney general

Responsibilities

Management Scope

The assistant attorney general has three or four deputy assistant attorneys general and manages about 30 people in the Office of Legal Policy.

Primary Responsibilities

® Oversees the vetting process for federal judicial nominees, mostly, and coordinates the judicial appointment process with the White House and the Senate
® Develops and implements the department’s significant policy initiatives
® Handles special projects that implicate the interests of multiple department components
® Coordinates with other interested department components and executive branch agencies
® Serves as an important policy advisor to the attorney general, deputy attorney general and associate attorney general
® Reviews and coordinates all regulations promulgated by the department and its components2 OPM
